Step 1 — Set up your account
eBook publishing (start-to-finish), grouped by the path you’re most likely to use.
1) Fast path: Publish on Amazon KDP (Kindle)
- Go to Amazon KDP → sign in with your Amazon account
- Complete:
- Author/publisher info
- Payment + tax interview
- Bank details (for royalties)
Step 2 — Prep your manuscript
- Write in Google Docs or Word
- Use simple styles:
- Heading 1 for chapter titles
- Normal for body
- Insert page breaks between chapters
- Avoid: tabs for indents, extra blank lines, fancy fonts
Step 3 — Format the eBook file
Pick one:
- Easiest: KDP’s Kindle Create (exports a .kpf)
- Most control: Vellum (Mac) or Atticus (web)
- DIY: Word → export filtered HTML / or upload DOCX and let KDP convert (works, but less predictable)
Checklist before export:
- Clickable Table of Contents
- Consistent headings
- Links work (your website, other books, etc.)
- No headers/footers (not needed for reflowable eBooks)
Step 4 — Create a cover
- Build a 2D Kindle cover (front only)
- Typical size: ~1600×2560 px (works well across devices)
- Use readable title/subtitle at thumbnail size
- Export: JPG or PNG
Step 5 — Create your KDP listing
In KDP → “Create eBook”:
- Book title + subtitle
- Series info (optional)
- Author name / pen name
- Description (use short paragraphs + bullets)
- Keywords (7)
- Categories (pick the closest, not the biggest)
Step 6 — Upload files
- Upload manuscript (KPF/EPUB/DOCX)
- Upload cover
- Use the Previewer and check:
- TOC works
- Chapter breaks
- Any weird spacing
- Links
Step 7 — Price + territories
- Choose royalty plan (usually 70% where eligible)
- Set price
- Choose territories (often “All territories”)
Step 8 — Publish
- Hit Publish
- Review status until “Live”
